You’ve had 13 years of experience in esports. How did you first get involved, and how did your passion become profession?

I have been a fan of esports from a very young age. Back then, there was a Shanghai Media Group TV channel called Gamefy, which often broadcasted esports live. Later, I got to know the Gamefy announcer and host from that time. In my third year of middle school, I came to Shanghai alone and went to the competition site, where I got to experience esports competitions in person. Later, I also participated in some of their competitions as a volunteer. I’ve been more fortunate than many other people who work in esports, because I’ve been exposed to real esports from a very early age.

Choosing this industry as a career was something I considered for some time when I was in graduate school. At that time, I realized that I wasn’t passionate in my undergraduate studies (communication engineering), and after careful consideration, I thought that I had a competitive advantage in terms of my domestic and overseas exports connections. In addition, I have had a deeper understanding of the exports industry since I was a child, so with exports becoming increasingly popular, I chose to enter the esports industry after graduating and returning to China.

What is the biggest misconception about esports in China?

A lot of young people today can’t really tell if their passion is in gaming or esports. I often come across private messages on social media from people who are passionate about League of Legends, Honor of Kings, Dota 2, etc. and want to work in the esports industry. Passion is important in the exports industry, but equally important is one’s own skills and abilities. Many young people’s knowledge of the esports industry is still limited to on-screen presentation, such as players, commentators, coaches, hosts, etc., but they ignore the many roles behind the scenes. These roles require more specialized knowledge than in-game knowledge, such as project management, programming, stage building, etc. It can be said that our industry needs to work harder to popularize the basics of esports.

How does competitive esports culture compare in China and the West?

Actually, both Chinese and Western esports cultures aspire to ultimate victory. There are only some ideological differences between China and the West. In China, for example, esports was recognized as a sport by the State Sport General Administration of China as early as 2003; however, in the West today, there are still many countries, such as Britain, France and Germany, that do not recognize esports as a sport. Traditional sports are more based on competition between countries. Therefore, you will find that Chinese esports are more cohesive and often feature the national flag waving on the playing field. On the other hand, in the West, esports are more club-oriented and we see many players of different nationalities on the same team.

How is the Chinese government’s recognition of esports as a profession in 2019 impacting Chinese youths’ choice of careers and the overall growth of the industry?

In 2019, Chinese government recognized two esports professions, esports professional and esports operator, which is a significant recognition for the industry. In fact, the majority of esports players are between the ages of 16 and 25. For Chinese citizens, adulthood doesn’t begin until the age of 18, so parental attitudes towards esports are the first barrier to entry for professional athletes.  It can be said that the government’s recognition of the esports profession has solved many parents’ worries, allowing their children to have more choices in their own life path.

How is the Chinese industry creating a more equitable space for female players to succeed at the same level as male players?

First of all, we need to admit that in traditional sports, men and women compete separately. This is because men’s bodies are scientifically proven to be physically higher performing than women’s bodies. But this argument is not supported in esports because esports do not rely on physical confrontation. So in theory, men and women can compete on the same stage. The situation is very complicated. Generally speaking, there are still less women players than men, but the number of female players has been increasing in recent years. Therefore, the appearance of more and more female professional players will be an inevitable trend, and our industry should be ready to welcome more and more female professional players to join. In addition to increasing diversity in the industry, people outside the industry should eliminate their stereotypes that esports mainly consists of fat, young Otaku men aged 16-25.

With the rapid growth and profitability of esports globally, how do you expect commercial brands will interact with gamers and participate in the creation of new games in the future?

Many people believe that the origin of esports comes from games. In all sports cultures, the game is just a medium. If no one was playing soccer, the sport would not have a cultural identity. In the esports industry, what gets the most attention from brands and outsiders is not the game, but the professional players, the teams, the tournaments, the audiences, and in short, the entire community. The commercial success of League of Legends tournaments is actually the creation of a business model for esports. League of Legends is just a key to unlocking this model.  So what brands should focus on is not just collaborating with popular games, but engaging with the community behind it.

What do you expect will be the immediate impacts of the addition of esports to the 2024 Olympics to the global esports industry and worldwide conception of esports?

In previous years, people were interested in esports entering the Olympic Games because it needed to be recognized by the mainstream. But actually in my opinion, at least in China, esports are already mainstream now. Whether esports will enter the Olympic Games or not is now more like a competition between the old school of competitive thinking and the new school of competitive thinking. If esports does make it to the Olympics, it will be a good thing for the global esports industry, but if it doesn’t work out, I don’t think you have to be too upset. After all, every year the industry grows by leaps and bounds, and I’m excited to see how big it will be in 4 years.

How is XR changing the landscape of how esports is played and broadcasted?

I previously interviewed the people responsible for the XR technology at League of Legends Worlds on TEO. It’s a top-notch technology for both esports and major commercial films. The same team that was responsible for the XR technology for the League of Legends World Series was also responsible for the XR technology for Disney’s The Mandalorian. I think the COVID-19 pandemic has in some ways accelerated the use of new technology in esports, allowing more virtualization within games to be combined with reality, which is pretty cool.

What are the biggest developments in esports that we should be on the lookout for in the near future?

At this stage I think it’s the use of 5G and mobile gaming. This is a trend that can be obviously seen, as Chinese smartphone brands have been gradually recognized and even feared by the world. And when 5G technology is implemented, many possibilities will present themselves. We should remember that the 4G mobile billing model was unimaginable before 4G was implemented.
